For more than 25 years, Beckhoff has used Windows as the exclusive operating system for its industrial PC products. As a result, Windows CE served as the base for all of Beckhoff’s smaller automation devices. In 2015, Beckhoff’s customers noted ransomware attacks on their Windows-powered devices. With the end-of-life of Windows CE on the horizon, Beckhoff started to look elsewhere for an operating system.
Beckhoff needed a proven and reliable operating system that would support their product line’s full range of hardware, from ARM to Intel Xeon. Preferring open standards, Beckhoff first looked at Linux as a choice to replace Windows CE but was deterred due to The GNU General Public License that would create additional legal complications for Beckhoff’s customers as well as force Beckhoff to share their proprietary real-time, TwinCAT, which runs in kernel-mode. As a result, Beckhoff determined the need for an open source operating system with a permissive license, allowing them to adapt the kernel to accommodate the TwinCAT real-time without needing to contribute TwinCAT’s source code.

Colin Percical, a FreeBSD RE csapat vezetője bejelentette a FreeBSD 14.1-PRERELEASE-t. Innentől kezdve a fejlesztőket arra biztatják, hogy inkább a hibajavításokon, mintsem új feature-ökön dolgozzanak. A 14.1-BETA1 két héten belül várható.
A The Register cikke szerint a TrueNAS CORE 13 lesz (a jelenlegi tervek szerint) az utolsó FreeBSD-alapú TrueNAS verzió. A 13.1-gyel a 13-as sorozatot még karbantartják, de abba már új funkciókat nem terveznek. FreeBSD 14 alapon pedig egyáltalán nem terveznek TrueNAS verziót kihozni. Figured I'd try to help clarify some things here.
Right now the plan for CORE is to release a 13.1 update in Q1 of 2024. This will be a maintenance-only type update which includes an update to the FreeBSD base, OpenZFS and Samba. No new features expected. We have no plans for a FreeBSD 14-based TrueNAS at this time, and the 13.1 release will be a longer-lived maintenance train for those who want to continue running on the BSD product before migrating to SCALE later at some later date. FreeBSD 13.3-RC1 builds will be starting a bit late because we're waiting for the arm64 package set to be ready. I still expect them to be ready by Monday so people can test.
We expect a few more changes in RC1 -- wifi stability fixes, updates to unbound and heimdal, and a bug fix affecting Promise RAID1 with 4+ disks -- but I'm hoping to have 13.3 wrapped up by the end of the month.
